Margaret’s Hope is situated 8 kms north of Kurseong town and lies below the hill Cart Road. It shares common boundaries with Balasun Tea Garden to the south and Ringtone Tea Garden to the north-west. The Beltar river flows between its two divisions i.e. Margaret’s Hope and Maharanee. It is a mark acclaimed both at home and abroad for quality teas produced from the Chinary bushes which comprises a major portion of the garden.

The terrain of this garden is generally steep mountain slopes situated between 2000ft. to 5000ft. above sea level. The population is around 3500 and the workforce is around 950. The total planted area is approximately 361Ha.

The history of this estate is rather interesting. It was incepted around 1865 under the name of Bara-Ringtong. Legend goes that the gardens name was changed to Margaret’s Hope in and around 1927-30 by Mr. Cruikshank to commemorate his deceased daughter of the same name.

Apparently Ms. Margaret visited the garden and fell in love with the place. When it was time for her to return to England, she vowed to return. Unfortunately, this was not to be as she fell victim to some lethal tropical disease and left for her heavenly journey. The garden exists now as a symbol of her hopes. Â
