TEA IN CZECH REPUBLIC AND SLOVAKIA

Tea is not drunk very often in the Czech Republic or Slovakia. For most the people in these two countries, coffee us the daily drink of choice. Tea is available, however, in shops and tearooms, which serve a choice of the beverage and pastries. It is also served at bistros or cafes. During the day the bistors are occupied by local men playing chess and chatting up the day as they sip endless cups of coffee or tea.

Tea can be served in cups or glasses. Since the glasses are hot to touch, one has to learn how to hold them between the fingers.

Only black tea is drunk in Czech Republic and Slovakia. It is imported from Georgia in the C.I.S. as well as from Sri Lanka. Jasmine tea from China is also available.

In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, tea is made in the usual way by pouring boiling water loose black tea in a teapot and steeping. The tea is ready to be served when the tealeaves have settled.

When ordering tea in a café, one would ask for:
Cha: black tea.
Cha s mlekem: tea with milk.
Cha s citronem: tea with lemon.
