There are some important facts about Tea which are extremely old and are unknown to many. Let us get to know more about this beverage which was used as a medical herb once upon a time but now has become as a drink of comfort and pleasure.
1610 Green tea began its migration from East to West. The Dutch traders obtained tea cargo from Macao, an outpost of the advanced Cathay Empire. They purchased the tea from the Portuguese, who are allowed to trade there.
1618 Tea arrived in Russia. It was first brought to Moscow by the Chinese ambassadors to the Russian tsar.
1707 A weaver named Thomas Twining opened a Coffee House in Devereux Court, just off London’s Strand Street. The location had proved profitable because many of the aristocrats lived nearby in the west end of the city. Twining did a very good business as using tea as a main attraction to draw customers to his shop.
1717 Thomas Twining converted his Tom’s Coffee house into the first Tea shop and named it “The Golden Lyon.”
1826 A new feature in the tea trade was introduced. A Englishman John Horniman sold tea in sealed packages. He also developed a machine that should hold larger quantities of tea.
1836 Two brothers, Edward and Joseph Tetley, sold tea and salt on horseback to the farmers and the villagers of Yorkshire. Joseph Tetley & Company Ltd was founded as a tea-packing house. .
1904 American iced tea was invented at the St. Louis World’s fair with the temperature climbing to over 104 degrees, a tea promoter named Richard Blechynden had a tough time selling his hot tea to an already sweating crowd of spectators.
1914-18 leaders of the British war time effort found that they could increase their workers productivity by giving them a supply of tea to get them through the day. Tea also accompanied the soldiers to war as part of their rations.
